Mystery Books Newsletter from BellaOnline.com

Hi everyone,

Edie here with the latest featured mystery book. Today's offering is from debut mystery novelist Cheryl Crane. Some of you may remember that she is the daughter of Hollywood legend Lana Turner.

Following the adage to write what you know, Ms. Crane has written a fine mystery set among the glitter and glamour of Hollywood.

I think you will like Realtor to the stars and amateur sleuth, Nikki Harper, and her mother, former screen idol Victoria Bordeaux. I'm most impressed with the humor throughout this novel, and the surprise ending. If you enjoy a well-written whodunit, you will want to check this one out!

Here's the latest article from the Mystery Books site at BellaOnline.com.

The Bad Always Die Twice Review
1950's actor Rex March died in a fiery plane crash in the California desert. Six month's later his body showed up in the bed of his former lover, and police accuse her of killing him just a few hours before he was found.

Jokes & Riddles Newsletter from BellaOnline.com

Happy Autumn Equinox!

This topic area is still looking for a new editor. If you or someone you know would be interested in writing for this site, please visit the pages at http://www.bellaonline.com/misc/joinus/ to apply! We'd love to hear from you!

In the meantime, here is a beautiful offering from BellaOnline to help you enjoy the beginning of fall.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Autumn Equinox is when we release our fall issue of our Mused Literary Magazine! Take a short break from your chores and savor the offerings. Here is more about this new issue:
Autumn with its rich, vibrant hues inspires us to breathe in the richness of life and celebrate each day. There are the exuberant images of whales waving hello against the mountains of Antarctica. Then there are the tiny, 8mm beauties which radiate an ethereal glow. In between are the landscapes so serenely beautiful they seem like a fantasy brought to life.
Poetry paints the air with its mosaic of sounds. We are seduced by the wail of a saxophone and haunted by the images of a woman struggling against cancer. A sister comes to term with her fractious relationship with her sibling. Young love blossoms on the wooden slats of a dock's edge.
Fiction twists our emotions as an expectant mother fears the worst. A lonely woman craves the grace of dancers' delicate movements. An abused woman clutches at her options and seeks escape.
Non-Fiction aims the spotlight on the experiences of our community. A grandmother struggles with the loss of her beloved mother. A tour guide in Alaska enriches visitors with knowledge of the Tlingit culture. A wife finds friction with her tough-old-bird husband, yet appreciates why they remain side by side.
Life is not a smooth, effortless sail from one coast to another. It is often rough and stormy, with fierce squalls and periods of dead calm where all motion seems to be lost. Maybe it is these stops and starts which remind us to look around us with an active eye and appreciate the beauty which inhabits every corner of our world. Every moment has something to teach us, if we would but stop and listen.
Enjoy our Autumn Equinox issue of the Mused Literary Review!
http://www.bellaonline.com/review/issues/fall2011/
For those interested in the print copy, you can use the code "OKTOBERFEST305" to get 15% off the price through September 26, 2011. That is Lulu's discount - we already have the profits set to zero so you get the cheapest price we can list it at. Enjoy!
Have a lovely weekend :)
Literary Fiction Newsletter from BellaOnline.com
"It was, as I have said, a fine autumnal day; the sky was clear and serene, and nature wore that rich and golden livery which we always associate with the idea of abundance."
BOOKS ON MY NIGHT STAND
Pigeon English by Stephen Kelman
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1408810638/mewo-20
Child narrators are perfect for modern literature. Like Mockingbird's Scout Finch and Christopher Boone of A Curious Incident before him, 11-year-old Harri Opoku tells his story without guile, all the better for us to ponder life's pathos and recognize its ironies. From what I've read so far, Harri is clearly disturbed by the fatal knifing in the opening chapter. He was only "half friends" with the victim, who went to a different school, but we can read his preoccupation with the boy's death between the lines of the first otherwise blithe chapters.
Harri has, of course, been compared to Jack from Emma Donoghue's Room, which made the Booker shortlist last year. In fact, he's not even the only young narrator in this year's shortlist: Jaffy Brown of Jamrach's Menagerie, by Carol Birch, is giving him a run for his money. It's a good thing, then, that Harri's the second-best runner in Grade 7. Stay tuned for more as I continue reading this book ...
***
TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION
If you could coin a word, what would it be?
I'm in the middle of reading, among other things, Stephen Kelman's Pigeon English and Shakespeare's Hamlet. Kelman's narrator has a quirky vocabulary inflected with what I'm guessing are expressions from his native Ghanaian: asweh, hutious, advise yourself. "In England," Harri remarks, "there's a hell of different words for everything. It's for if you forget one, there's always another one left over. It's very helpful."
The English have their Bard to thank for that, of course. I read recently that the average person uses about 17,000 words in an entire lifetime, but Shakespeare used twice that in his works. When English didn't provide him with the right word, he coined the word himself, including: besmirch, excitement, hush, pander and rant - all of which appear in Hamlet.
So, have you found yourself forgetting a word lately, and wished you could just make one up? What would the word be? Post it on the forum!
BOOKS ON MY NIGHT STAND
Agatha Christie's Murder of Roger Ackroyd, a graphic novel by Bruno Lachard
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/284810175X/mewo-20
First published in France in 2004, this is one of only eight comic-book adaptations of Christie printed by Harper so far. It's like reading Poirot in the world of Tintin - and it works. It works far better than the BBC TV production released in 2000, in which Christie's narrative sleight-of-hand was all but abandoned and the story reworked beyond recognition. The only good thing about it was David Suchet's Poirot.
The graphic-novel format allows Dr. Sheppard to narrate, as he does in Christie's novel. The first panel shows the village of King's Abbot just before dawn, train tracks on one side, church spire in the distance. Sheppard's opening words frame the rest of the story: "Almost five in the morning. I reread my manuscript for the last time. It all started with the death of Mrs. Ferrars on the night of 16 September ... " Muted colors create a noir-ish atmosphere and suggest - wordlessly, subtly - that what we're seeing may not be what we should believe.
Given the mystery's solution, I can see how the novel might be impossible to render word for word in images. Yet, as illustrated brilliantly in this book, Lachard succeeds where BBC screenwriter Clive Exton miserably, utterly failed.
TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION
Booker Prize 2011 shortlist
The always anticipated Booker shortlist was announced on September 6. The six contenders are:
The Sense of an Ending - Julian Barnes (third time on the shortlist)
Jamrach's Menagerie - Carol Birch (longlisted in 2003)
The Sisters Brothers - Patrick deWitt
Half Blood Blues - Esi Edugyan
Pigeon English (debut novel) - Stephen Kelman
Snowdrops (debut novel) - A. D. Miller
I have Kelman on my bookshelf, and I'll be dipping into it soon between work reads. I've also heard good things about the Barnes.
Have you read any of the shortlisted books? If so, what did you think of it? Please share your thoughts, or - if you dare - predict which one will win! The prize will be awarded on October 18.
BOOKS ON MY NIGHT STAND
Twitterature by Alexander Aciman & Emmett Rensin
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0143117327/mewo-20
By no means is this 2009 book a new or recent phenomenon, and it spoofs literary fiction rather than adds to its ranks. But it's fun. And for a reader whose attention span is shrinking, what could be shorter than a classic work in 20 tweets or fewer?
"Twitterature," as described on the book's cover, summarizes the classics "for the twenty-first-century intellect." It works because classic fiction is mostly about tragedy, which should ultimately be spoof-proof. A classic should stand up to not only the test of time, but also the modern habit of viewing things through an ironic lens.
So here's Hamlet (username: OedipusGothplex), my favorite tragic prince: "My royal father gone and nobody seems to care. Mom says to stop wearing black. STOP TRYING TO CONTROL ME! I wish my skin would just ... melt."
Here's Crime and Punishment's Raskonikov, the most morose character I've ever had to read: "It's hard being a poor student - lots of work, crappy room, and I have the ugliest hat this side of the Urals." Later: "I've got it. Rather than accept financial aid from my friend, I'll murder an elderly money-lender in cold blood. Why? I'm not telling." Oh, sure he's not. After a dozen tweets: "I think the coppers are starting to get suspicious on account of my acting LIKE A CRAZY PERSON WHO KILLED AN OLD WOMAN." Later still: "Another day in the old jail cell. Everything seems pretty bleak. Other prisoners hate me, and there's nothing much to do." And finally: "Oh hey, it's the New Testament. I'd like to suggest that this book is going to change my life, but that's really a story for another time ... "
This book will certainly save me from feeling like I have to actually spend time on Candide or Swann's Way, Eugene Onegin or The Sorrows of Young Werther. Don Quixote is hilarious: "People say that sleep deprivation, isolation, and too much reading have made me loopy. But I say nay! Nay!!!" And Heathcliff sounds much livelier than he does in Wuthering Heights: "A family has found me, and they keep calling me gypsy. Have I stolen their wallets yet? NO."
True to contemporary language use, the tweets are rife with swear words, so this is not a book for the sweet-natured. But it's all in good fun. Besides, it's totally in character for Sir Gawain and Huck Finn to exclaim, "WTF?" :-)
TOPICS FOR DISCUSSION
LitFic Challenge: 140 characters in 140 characters
Inspired by reading Twitterature, I came up with this "140 characters" game. Here it is in brief (of course):
Think of a character from a novel or short story. It doesn't have to be a classic, but the more serious and tragic the story, the more fun you can probably have with it.
Give the character a username. Writing as this character, summarize his/her story or persona or conflict in as few tweets as possible. How many tweets you'll need to post depends on how easy or hard it is for others to guess the character.
So the object for players is obviously to guess the character based on your tweets. When we reach a total of 140 characters (characters as in fictional persons, not the elements of sentences), I'll tally up and announce the winner.
Sound like fun? I hope so. I'll start with the first character. As soon as you can guess who it is, post your answer to the forum, and send in your own character tweets!
